For those running a new Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book there is a very small subset of you with unique Wi-Fi access points that may be getting slow connections despite high-speed access.

Skype says connection is way too weak. So, I work online as a spanish tutor. A week ago, my hard drive died, and got a new one. (PC/Mac), if you're on desktop.

Some users are reporting that their connection starts with high throughput but quickly dwindles down to a crawl. Microsoft support has confirmed a small driver setting that is causing this issue in their support forums.

'We have a known issue with .41 that results in low throughput with specific access points. The issue is specific to MAC layer aggregation (AMSDU over AMPDU) and only impacts a small subset of access points. We are working on a fix for an upcoming update. Until the fix is available, please update the registry key setting to work around this issue.'

One example of this was from someone using a Comcast router, another with a Netgear Nighthawk X8 router and some general issues with 5 GHz connections. Luckily, there is an easy fix:

  1. Press Windows button. Search for Regedit. Open it
  2. Navigate to the following path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001Servicesmrvlpcie8897
  3. Find the item labeled 'TXAMSDU.' Double tap and modify the value from 1 to 0
  4. Restart the machine

We have not experienced these connection issues on any of our Surfaces, and it does not appear to be widespread either due to the specific nature of the MAC layer in question. Still, if you are experiencing a slow Wi-Fi connection despite having high speed access it may be worth taking the 30 seconds to enable this registry change. If you are not experiencing these connection problems changing the registry will likely have little impact on your current setup.

Microsoft may have delayed Windows 10X and Surface Neo beyond 2020

Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10X and Surface Neo products may not be shipping in time for the holiday after all, according to a new report from ZDNet's Mary-Jo Foley. This means that other Windows 10X devices from third-party manufactures also won't be launching at the end of this year like originally planned. Microsoft's dual-screen Windows 10X effort has been put on pause.

Earlier this month Microsoft announced a new program for Skype users, allowing them to migrate their Skype accounts to Microsoft accounts and/or link them to existing Microsoft accounts.

Here’s why you should link your Microsoft and Skype accounts to further secure them. For a while, reports have been coming in indicating that Microsoft’s Skype accounts have been hacked, with users of Skype receiving spam messages from their Skype contacts, indicating a possible breach in Skype’s security.

While Microsoft has updated Skype’s back-end to link it with their more secure Microsoft account database, this isn’t readily apparent to users of either service for some reason, as the firm hasn’t had any public communications via way of notification informing users of this change.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com
  2. Login to your Skype account by using your Skype specific username and password. Even if you’re already linked your account to Skype previously, you’ll still need to use your Skype details. If you’re logged into your Microsoft account, you should log out and re-sign in using your Skype details and not your Microsoft one.
  3. Once that is done, you will be asked to sign in to your Microsoft account. Should you have multiple Microsoft accounts, choose the one that you would be using. For this tutorial, I’m using a dummy Skype and Microsoft account to demonstrate the process.
  4. Click Next to Update your Skype account with your pre-existing Microsoft account-linking them.
  5. You will be asked to enter your password, once this is done, you will be able to use your Microsoft account password -and only that – to sign into Skype.
  6. If you have another Skype account which is already tangentially connected to that Microsoft account, you will be warned that this link will be terminated
  7. Upon a successful login, Microsoft will alert you that you now have a single password for both Skype and other Microsoft services.
